根據外媒報導，敘利亞北部由叛軍控制的城鎮Khan Sheikhoun爆發毒氣攻擊，據英國組織「敘利亞人權瞭望台」(Syrian Observatory for Human Rights) 統計，死亡人數到達72人，其中20人是兒童、17人是婦女，傷者及受毒氣影響健康者超過400人。

戰機對杜馬、Kafr Batna及Saqba等城市進行空襲，並在週三 (4日) 空襲Khan Sheikhoun。空襲當時沒有平民傷亡，因為他們已經在之前就疏散了，沒想到後來卻爆發毒氣外洩事件。

這場攻擊是從2013年8月大馬士革古塔區數百位平民遭沙林毒氣殺死以來，死傷最嚴重的化學武器攻擊事件。但另一方面，敘利亞政府卻表示他們沒有化學武器，「沒有使用且不會使用它們，無論在過去或是未來，因為從一開始就未擁有化學武器」。

聯合國安全理事會5日則對此事件召開緊急會議，70國代表出席。美英、俄國雙方對於這場攻擊是否該指責敘利亞官方的阿塞德政權又採對立面。以美國為首的西方國家認為阿塞德政權是這次毒氣攻擊的元兇，認為證據顯示殺人武器是阿塞德政權投擲的化學彈。

而德國更指控俄國與伊朗也必須為此事負起部分責任，因為阿塞德政權若沒有俄國跟伊朗的支持，早就同意與反對勢力協商結束內戰。

但另一方面，阿塞德政權指稱這樣的說法都是反抗軍汙衊。俄國國防部長則表示毒氣外洩是因為空襲時戰機打中反抗軍的化學兵工廠，造成毒氣外洩。不過他們並未說明打中工廠是無意還是刻意的。

Sarin, which is made by combining the fluorine in sodium fluoride with carbon, hydrogen, oxygen and phosphorous, is considered one of the world's most dangerous chemical warfare agents.
